HOT WEATHER REMINDER: PETS & VEHICLES 🐾🌡️

As temperatures continue to rise, we want to remind pet owners of an important Columbus City Ordinance regarding animals left in vehicles.

Columbus City Ordinance Sec. 5-12(8) states:
"It shall be a violation of this section for an animal to be left unattended in a vehicle if the inside temperature of the vehicle exceeds 80 degrees."

With outdoor temperatures now consistently reaching and exceeding 80 degrees throughout the day, the inside of a parked vehicle can quickly rise above 80 degrees—even if the windows are cracked or partially open.

A common misconception is that cracking a window keeps a vehicle cool enough for pets. Unfortunately, that is not the case. Vehicle interiors can heat up rapidly, creating dangerous and potentially life-threatening conditions for animals.

Our Animal Services Officers are equipped with laser temperature thermometers that allow them to accurately measure the temperature inside vehicles when responding to calls regarding animals left unattended.

For your pet's safety, please leave them at home if you cannot take them inside with you. Even a short errand can become dangerous when temperatures rise.
