Did you know that a lack of sewage pipes influenced medieval European fashions? For example, women and men both wore high heels and wide brimmed hats to protect their clothes from exposure to waste that was simply thrown out windows and doors into the streets.

Around 510 BC, Rome built the Cloaca Maxima, an initial system of drains designed to channel sewage, waste water, and storm runoff out of the city. The main outlet drained directly into the Tiber River, and it is still visible today.
