Our Story

The TAMUC Children’s Learning Center has been a part of the university for over 40 years, first being located on campus and then by the Children’s Museum since 1989. The CLC, a nationally accredited, 4-Star Texas accredited program, serves students and faculty/staff of the university, as well as families from the community. The on-campus location gives parents the luxury of worry-free child care in a learning atmosphere while they concentrate on their work and studies.

The CLC not only has full-time staff who have been with the center for 10+ years, but the center also employs many student workers majoring in areas such as education, social work, nursing, and psychology and have a desire to work with children. Student workers are given the opportunity to work in an environment where they are getting hands on experience with every day lives of children. Through hands on learning and over 30 hours of training each year, staff learn about brain development, conscious discipline, positive interactions, special needs, curriculum planning and implementation, and the importance of quality child care and being accredited.

The CLC uses a research-based curriculum that features exploration and discovery through play called Creative Curriculum. The curriculum incorporates play and learning through hands-on experiences in centers appropriate for the age group such as art, manipulatives, blocks, library, science, writing, math, music, technology, outdoor, and group times. The curriculum meet domains such as social-emotional, physical, language, literacy, cognitive, mathematics, technology, science, social studies, and arts. The curriculum also includes ways to include children with special needs or English as a second language.

Each classroom has a daily schedule that not only includes all the activities mentioned above, but also includes three USDA approved meals (breakfast, lunch, and snack), and meeting their basic needs such as diaper changes, pottying, washing hands, and rest time.
