I wanted to share a recent experience that made me reflect on the valuable lessons leaders can learn from handling mistakes and setbacks.
Last week, I took some time off and attended the Formula 1 race weekend in Austin, Texas. After the race concluded, I was surprised to learn that seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton had been disqualified after finishing second place. They had an issue with the car that didn't meet the rules during the post-race inspection. What struck me most about this incident was Lewis Hamilton's response and his exemplary approach to the situation.
Instead of blaming the team or dwelling on the disqualification, Lewis Hamilton displayed the qualities of a leader. He recognized the collective effort of the entire team that had brought them to where they were rather than focusing on the specific technical rule they failed to meet during the inspection. He also emphasized looking forward and learning from the team's progress.
In his own words, Hamilton said, "We can be happy with many things. I feel positive as weโre moving forward, even if reflecting on it we could have possibly won today. It is of course disappointing to be disqualified post-race but that doesnโt rake away from the progress weโve made this weekend."
As a leader and a coach, I believe there is much we can learn from this event. While it's natural to feel disappointment when faced with setbacks, it's crucial that we maintain a forward-looking perspective. Rather than dwelling on mistakes, focus on what we can learn from them and how we can continue moving forward.
In our journey, it's essential that we acknowledge the collective efforts of our team, just as Lewis Hamilton did, and strive to foster an environment where learning and growth are at the forefront of our endeavors.
Let's keep in mind the valuable lesson Lewis Hamilton's response teaches us as we face our own challenges and setbacks in the future. Embrace each experience as an opportunity to learn and improve and keep moving forward towards your goals.

Are you an active listener?
Here are a couple of things to think about as you answer this. Do you listen intending to react or speak as soon as possible, or are you the type that generally can relate to the speakerโs emotions? What about paying attention deeply with full attention, or are you working on the computer or phone? These are some areas to consider when developing your active listening skills.
Here are a few tips to work on to develop your active listening skills.
1. Fight the urge to listen for a break so you may jump in with your point. When you hold off on the need to make a point and instead provide your full attention to the speaker, you can process the words and comprehend the message. You will get a deeper understanding and comprehension, allowing you to respond more effectively.
2. Reduce distractions such as working on a project or being on a device or computer. Be present so the complete message is received.
3. Focus on the message and not the delivery. It can be normal for many to judge others, take the time to recognize when you are doing this, and work to shift so you are only concerned with the message.
4. Ask questions to clarify and ensure you understand the speaker accurately.
Working to develop these areas can lead to deeper understanding, trust, empathy, and deeper connections with the individuals around you. It can also lead to an environment of open communication that is more authentic. This all takes practice and dedication.
