What were your favorite times this year?

As a kid I was always much more into science fiction than horror, but the classic monsters (vampires, werewolves, etc) were always at the intersection of both genres. For me, and I’m sure most people my age, Dracula was the gateway character to vampire lore which has fascinated me for as long as I can remember. Just as fascinating was Dracula’s equal and opposite, Professor Abraham Van Helsing.

His encyclopedic knowledge and righteous intensity intimidates other characters but at the beginning - he also intimidated me a little. The towering part of his presence came very quickly from the read-through but in an effort to find vulnerability and nuance, I had to dig deep to fill the shoes of such an iconic character.

Only the audience can say if I did him any justice, but I can say it’s been my whole-hearted delightful privilege to bring Van Helsing to life on stage for so many people. (Sometimes even children. We can only hope it stokes a fire for further exploration into gothic horror.)

I will surely miss him when he’s gone.
