If your home was built in the 1990s, you should have it inspected for polybutylene pipe, which is subject to failure. While officially, this pipe wasn’t used in homes built after 1993, plumbers and house inspectors have found it in homes constructed as late as 1998.

Home and building inspectors have been concerned about polybutylene pipe for some time. The plastic piping came on the market in 1978, but fewre than ten years later, the pipes began failing at an accelerated rate, causing significant damage in many instances.
