Last April, Sen. Susan Collins played a crucial role in advancing a massive Republican-led budget package that sends $70 billion in funding to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Border Patrol through 2029, despite growing disapproval from Mainers over the conduct of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

ICE shot and killed a Colombian man in Maine. This is the 2nd time in a week the agency used deadly force 07/13/2026

A 26-year-old Colombian man was shot and killed by an ICE agent in Maine—the second time in just one week that the agency has used deadly force.

The man reportedly had legal work authorization and was not the original target of the deportation warrant. Federal officials claim he attempted to use his vehicle as a weapon, but serious questions remain, including why the agents involved were not wearing body cameras. State and federal investigations are now underway.

No federal agency should operate without transparency, oversight and accountability—especially when a person’s life is taken. The American people deserve an independent investigation, the preservation and release of all available evidence, and clear answers about ICE’s escalating use of deadly force.

Immigration enforcement must never come at the expense of due process, human dignity or the rule of law.
