There are new emails going around that say they are giving away money or paying your bills as relief from Hurricane Harvey. Once you click on the link in the email all the files on your computer are encrypted. Then the entire network you are on is encrypted. There is no way to get any data back without paying them to release your files. This will even affect backups.
Please remember that no one is going to solicit you in order to give you money, or pay your bills. There are government programs to provide assistance for this, but you must contact them. The red cross and several other non profit charities also have programs set up for those in need, but they will not contact you.
