For many families, summer break is associated with freedom, fun, vacations, and less stress. ☀️
But for some children, the transition into summer can actually feel overwhelming.
Changes in routine, sleep schedules, structure, expectations, social dynamics, and daily predictability can significantly impact a child’s emotional regulation, behavior, anxiety levels, and overall sense of stability... particularly for children who thrive on consistency and structure.
Parents may notice:
• increased irritability
• difficulty with transitions
• emotional outbursts
• sleep disruptions
• withdrawal
• increased anxiety
• boredom that quickly turns into frustration
These responses are not necessarily “bad behavior.” Often, they reflect a child having difficulty adjusting to a major change in routine and regulation.
This does not mean children should not enjoy the flexibility of summer. Rather, it is a reminder that maintaining some level of predictability, structure, and emotional support during transitions can be incredibly beneficial for many children and adolescents.
If your child begins to struggle with emotional or behavioral changes during seasonal transitions, it can be helpful to look beyond the behavior itself and consider what underlying stressors, skill deficits, or changes in regulation may be contributing.

“It’s just a phase.”
Sometimes it is. But sometimes, it’s something more.
Children don’t always have the words to explain what they’re feeling, so it often shows up in their behavior instead.
Irritability. Defiance. Withdrawal. Changes at school.
Big emotional reactions.
These aren’t just “bad behavior.”
They can be signs that a child is overwhelmed, anxious, or struggling in ways that deserve attention and support.
On , it’s worth taking a moment to pause and ask:
Is this something they’ll grow out of… or something they need help through?
You don’t have to figure that out on your own.
That’s what we’re here for. 🤍
If something feels off, even if you’re not sure what it is, reach out. Let’s talk it through and figure out what support could look like for your child.

When a child is being taught above their current academic level, it doesn’t motivate them. It often creates frustration, avoidance, and a loss of confidence.
For children with learning differences, how we teach matters just as much as what we teach. Meeting a child at (or just above) where they are allows them to experience success, build skills, and actually see their progress over time.
That’s why individualized instruction and tracking growth are so important. When kids can see themselves improving, it changes how they feel about learning and about themselves.
If your child is working hard but still feeling discouraged or overwhelmed at school, it may be time to take a closer look at what they truly need to succeed.

A few years ago, Dr. Elise contributed to an article in Inside Northside Magazine focused on the mental health crisis of children right here in St. Tammany Parish.
While it was published back in 2023, the conversation is just as important today. Families across the Northshore are still navigating anxiety, learning challenges, behavioral concerns, and the question so many parents quietly ask: “Is this something more?”
Supporting children’s mental health isn’t just a national issue, it’s a community one. And understanding what our kids are facing is the first step toward helping them thrive.
It’s a thoughtful read for any parent, educator, or caregiver who’s ever wondered how to better understand and support the kids in their lives.
