Did you know that one of Germany's most famous early missionaries was actually an Irish monk?
Meet St. Kilian, a brave bishop and martyr of the 7th century. Driven by a deep love for Christ and a zeal to share the Gospel, Kilian left his homeland in Ireland and traveled to Rome. With the blessing of Pope Conon, he and his companions set off to evangelize the region of Franconia (modern-day Baden and Bavaria, Germany). Alongside his faithful companions, Colman (a priest) and Totnan (a deacon), St. Kilian found great success in spreading the faith. Their preaching was so impactful that they even converted the local ruler, Duke Gosbert of Würzburg!
However, living out the fullness of the Gospel requires immense courage. St. Kilian faithfully informed the Duke that his marriage to his brother’s widow went against Church law. Wanting to do what was right, the Duke resolved to separate from her. Sadly, while the Duke was away on a military expedition, his furious wife ordered the secret beheading of Kilian, Colman, and Totnan. The three holy men chose martyrdom over compromising the truth.
Today, St. Kilian is remembered for his fierce missionary spirit and is also known as the patron saint of those suffering from rheumatism.
Let us pray: St. Kilian, grant us the courage to stand up for the truth of the Gospel, even when it is difficult. Intercede for all missionaries spreading the faith today, and bring comfort and healing to those suffering from bodily pain. Amen.
The Real Roots of American Liberty
When we think about the Declaration of Independence, we often focus on the politics, the wars, and the brilliant minds of the Founding Fathers. But in 1925, President Calvin Coolidge reminded the nation of a deeper truth: The Declaration is, at its core, a spiritual document.
Coolidge pointed out that the ideals we cherish—equality, liberty, and human rights—aren't things we can see or touch. They didn't spring from material wealth or scientific advancement. Instead, they were born in the sermons and convictions of the early colonial clergy who taught a simple, profound truth: We are all created in the divine image.
"We cannot continue to enjoy the result if we neglect and abandon the cause." — Calvin Coolidge
The Warning for Modern Times
Coolidge left us with a powerful challenge that resonates just as loudly today. Our current material prosperity didn't create our freedom; our freedom created our prosperity. If we abandon the moral and spiritual foundations that built this country, all of our wealth will turn to a "barren sceptre in our grasp."
To preserve our heritage, we have to cultivate the same reverence for higher principles that our forefathers had. We must keep those "altar fires" burning.
What do you think? How can we better maintain the core ideals of our heritage in today's fast-paced, material world?
Happy Independence Day from Holy Cross Parish!
Thank you Lord for our freedom.

Through a life marked by long, grueling journeys, physical pain, and deep midnight prayers, Saint Junípero Serra lived by one unforgettable motto:
"Always forward, never back."
As the patron saint of California Missions, he brought both the gift of faith and an advocate's heart to the New World, even securing a historic "Bill of Rights" to protect the native communities from military mistreatment. Today, let’s ask for his same unquenchable zeal to face our own challenges with courage and devotion.
Saint Junípero Serra, pray for us!
