The Equity, Cultural, and Social Justice Commission invites you to join them in recognizing Kwanzaa, observed each year from December 26 through January 1. Kwanzaa is a week-long celebration that honors African heritage, culture, and community values.
Kwanzaa was founded in 1966 by Dr. Maulana Karenga as a way to bring African Americans together to celebrate their shared history and cultural traditions. The holiday centers on the Nguzo Saba (Seven Principles): Unity, Self-Determination, Collective Work and Responsibility, Cooperative Economics, Purpose, Creativity, and Faith.
Families and communities often celebrate by lighting the kinara, sharing meals, exchanging small gifts, and participating in cultural activities and storytelling.
Ways to observe:
✔ Learn about the Nguzo Saba
✔ Celebrate with family, friends, or community groups
✔ Support Black-owned businesses
✔ Reflect on values of unity, culture, and community
Help honor Kwanzaa by celebrating African heritage and the principles that strengthen community and connection.

FYI! Stay safe Covington.
The National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory, flood watch and heavy rainfall advisory for our area and Puget Sound Energy warns of potential for downed vegetation and power outages as well.
Message From PSE: Today, a strong Atmospheric River system is currently pushing into the region with heavy rain and with wind gusts of 30-50 mph, focused from noon to 10 p.m. Winds and rain ease Tuesday morning, then increase again Tuesday night. The combination of heavy rains weighing down vegetation along with saturated soils and breezy winds could lead to outages across much of our service area.
Now is a good time to gather some flashlights or candles, secure items on porches or in your yards and remember when driving to always turn around when you see water over the roadway!
