Great news: Homegrown Country Farm and First Go Farm, LLC were both reopened in time for the 4th of July weekend.

That is a win for these families, their customers, and our local farming community.

But there is still a catch.

They are only being allowed to reopen under the condition that they operate as a “retail store” instead of a farm stand, with a renewal required every two weeks because of a so-called “gray area” in the law.

That is red tape. Plain and simple.

The protections these farms relied on as farm stands have been in place since 2006. One of these farms has operated this way for more than seven years without a problem. Then suddenly, the State decides there is an issue?

This is now the 3rd and 4th farms I have had to fight for in the last 12 months.

That is not a coincidence. It is a trend.

State policies continue to make life harder for farmers, whether by trying to close farms, restrict what they can sell, or chip away at farming rights that have existed for years.

I am happy these farms are back open, but I will keep fighting to restore their full farming rights, eliminate the bureaucracy, and clean up these so-called gray areas. Once we start giving up rights that were already in place, we only make it easier for government to take more.

New Jersey farmers deserve support, not more paperwork.
