Congratulations to the 2nd Citizens Academy Class of 2024!
This year’s participants acquired knowledge on the various aspects of policing, public safety telecommunication, criminal investigations, and much more. These students met throughout the semester to foster a deeper understanding of police work and develop relationships with campus leaders and the campus police. Way to go, Cats!
Thank you to Dr. Caravelis, Chief Lillard, and Lieutenant Thompson for organizing the academy and putting their time into instruction, tours, and hands-on activities. Thank you to all the WCU Police Department officers who took the time to help teach sessions and make the environment more interactive, whether in RAD express or the active assailant scenario.
10/23/2024
In Citizens Academy we learned about RAD, which stands for R**e Aggression Defense. The members of the Academy were able to go hands-on with the techniques acquired.
Thank you to Officer Meads, Lieutenant Thompson, and Chief Lillard for taking the time to teach us how to better protect ourselves, if needed, for the future.
The mission of the Police Community Advisory Committee (PCAC) is to develop and maintain a partnership between the community and the Western Carolina University Police Department (WCUPD). This is an effort to reduce crime and to enhance the quality of life for all citizens through positive and open communication. Through Citizens Academy, students will develop a deeper understanding of police work and will get to know individual officers and important campus leaders.

Formal Statement Regarding Hurricane Helene's Impact and Community Safety
Issued by: the Police Community Advisory Committee Students Association (PCACSA)
Date: 9/30/2024
In response to the devastation caused by Hurricane Helene, which has tragically claimed many lives across multiple states, the Police Community Advisory Committee Students Association expresses its deepest condolences to all those affected. Our hearts go out to the families and individuals who have suffered such tremendous loss and to the communities now facing the daunting task of recovery. We thank all community stakeholders, such as first responders and Resident Assistants, who have worked hard to keep students safe and updated.
We urge all community members to prioritize their safety and follow guidance from local, University, and state emergency management officials. The storm's aftermath has left many areas hazardous, with flooding, debris, and downed power lines posing significant dangers. Please refrain from entering affected zones and report any unsafe conditions immediately.
To our student body and community partners, we encourage vigilance and proactive support during this challenging time. If you or someone you know requires assistance with relocation, food, or other emergency needs, please do not hesitate to reach out to local resources or contact us directly for guidance on available support channels.
We are committed to fostering a safe and resilient environment during this period of uncertainty. Let us come together to support one another and rebuild what has been lost.
Stay safe and vigilant.
Landon Orr (President) and Hannah Payne (Vice President) on behalf of the PCACSA Board of Directors
