So many of us have paused to read the poignant poem, "On Saying Farewell to Culver," so visible on a boulder not far from the Legion Memorial Building on Culver's campus near lake side. If you've looked more closely at the information on its author, you'll note that the 19-year-old First Classman died just over 95 years ago, almost to the day, on May 17, 1931.
John Lewis Adams died of pneumonia just weeks before he would have graduated from Culver, as you can read in these articles from the Vedette newspaper of the day (and the full source reference here: https://cdm17320.contentdm.oclc.org/digital/collection/vedette/id/15128/rec/3).
Here, also, is his Find-a-Grave entry: https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/77480821/john-lewis-adams
Thanks to Bill O'Brien CMA '90 whose inquiry inspired this post.

What was Thanksgiving like a century ago at Culver? Pulled from the Culver archives are files from the 1925 Thanksgiving festivities on campus, in those days when travel challenges meant students stayed for the holiday (though with plenty of excitement from football to theater and more). Here's a look, with warm wishes for a Happy Thanksgiving from the Culver archives and museum!
