Reliable communications start with understanding how they're actually used in the field.
At Betner Communications LLC, we've seen firsthand that one of the most overlooked factors affecting portable radio performance isn't always the radio system itself it's how the radio is being carried and used.
A common example is the use of handheld radios with lapel (remote speaker) microphones. While remote mics provide convenience, improve safety, and make radios easier to operate, they can also introduce unintended performance challenges. In many cases, the radio ends up clipped to a belt, inside a vest, or under turnout gear, placing the antenna against or behind the user's body. That positioning can reduce the effectiveness of the radio's transmitted and received signal.
For counties operating on a single-site repeater infrastructure, this becomes especially important. Unlike multi-site or simulcast systems that provide overlapping coverage, a single-site repeater has no redundancy. Every portable radio depends on maintaining a strong, reliable path to that one repeater. Even a modest loss in signal caused by body shielding or poor antenna placement can mean degraded audio, missed transmissions, or difficulty accessing the repeater from the edges of the coverage area.
We believe successful radio communications involve more than selecting the right equipment. It requires understanding RF propagation, system design, coverage expectations, and how users interact with their radios in real-world conditions. A radio system that performs well during acceptance testing can experience very different results once radios are worn under gear, paired with remote microphones, and used in challenging environments.
That's why we encourage agencies to evaluate not only their infrastructure, but also user practices, radio placement, accessories, and training. Small adjustments can often make a meaningful difference in communication reliability.
Dependable communications aren't achieved by infrastructure alone they're built through thoughtful system design, quality equipment, and informed users.

Shoutout to Bird for sending us this digital power meter to DEMO while out on jobs! We just completed the amplifier install for a county school system and really like this meter. We currently have two telewaves but we may add a bird to the mix soon!
