🌐 Exciting news for decentralization enthusiasts! The BBC is set to become the first major news outlet to join the Fediverse, marking a significant milestone in the evolution of social media.

During a 6-month trial period, various BBC services will post updates via Mastodon, one of several software instances connected to the decentralized social network known as the Fediverse. What's truly groundbreaking is that unlike traditional social media, the BBC will have no moderation controls over network replies but will retain control over what is displayed on their site - a risk they're willing to take in line with their mission.

This move comes in the wake of a recent clash with Twitter over a government funding label, prompting the BBC to look at the future beyond traditional platforms. The protocol enabling this is ActivityPub, the same one powering Meta's Threads and other major platforms evaluating connections to the Fediverse.

The Fediverse concept is similar to how email works, allowing users to pick a platform, subscribe to anyone anywhere, and share posts across platforms. This cross-platform functionality means social graphs will extend across networks, creating potential for new business models, and competition for the best user experience - reminiscent of the browser wars.

Notably, ads will be platform-specific, not network-wide. Posting once allows you to share with all followers, irrespective of their chosen platform. Crucially, businesses will own their intellectual property, brand, and not face arbitrary de-platforming.

BBC's move to the Fediverse signifies a promising shift towards a decentralized future, where platform choice and control of content could redefine the way we consume and share media.
