2026 Tax Tips (Quick Guide)

1. Get Organized
• Collect all W-2s, 1099s, interest statements, and receipts
• Keep records for charity, medical, education, and business expenses

2. Protect Your Identity
• Create/maintain an IRS Online Account
• Use an IP PIN to prevent tax fraud

3. Choose Direct Deposit
• Fastest and safest way to receive refunds
• You can split refunds into multiple accounts

4. Maximize Retirement Savings
• Contribute to IRAs, 401(k)s, or SEP IRAs to lower taxable income
• Contributions can often be made until April 2026

5. Use Deductions & Credits
• Take the standard deduction or itemize if higher
• Don’t miss credits like:
• Child Tax Credit (CTC)
• Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC)
• Education and Adoption Credits
• Seniors (65+) may qualify for extra deductions

6. Report All Income
• Includes side hustles, gig work, cash apps, digital assets, and online sales
• Income is taxable even if no 1099 is received

7. Adjust Withholding
• Update your W-4 after life changes (job, marriage, kids)
• Self-employed should make quarterly estimated payments

8. Watch for Scams
• IRS usually contacts by mail, not phone or text
• Never share personal info through unsolicited messages

9. Get Professional Help if Needed
• Helpful for self-employment, rentals, investments, or complex returns
