Did you know Edward “Dee Dee” Chandler? He was a famous drummer from New Orleans, LA, who played in both high class places like the Grunwald Hotels and in brothels back in the late 1800s. Back in those days multiple percussionists would share the stage, each playing a single drum. Sometimes bandleaders could reduce the amount of members in the percussion section by having drummers use a technique called “double drumming.”


This all changed when Mr. Chandler crudely concocted the earliest iterations of the bass drum pedal out of wood, rope, and in one case a piece of a milk carton from the grocery store where he worked. This allowed him and other drummers the ability to play more than one drum at the same time. The pedal was used to play the bass drum with his foot while freeing up his hands to play multiple drums and cymbals at the same d*** time. This allowed one man to do what was before a four man job. This changed the landscape of modern music forever.

Edward “Dee Dee” Chandler, an obscure figure in music history, a shadowy figure from the early New Orleans Jazz scene is truly a music legend and we celebrate him this black history month.
