Leadership is not just standing in front of the room. It is having the courage to tell the truth about what the job can take from you, and what it takes to heal.
Overwatch Peer Support Leader Mike Bergin recently shared his wellness journey with Garland Police Department recruits, including the impact of an Officer-Involved Shooting and the lessons learned through 30 years of policing.
These are the conversations that matter.
New officers need more than tactics, policy, and procedure. They need to hear from experienced officers who are willing to speak openly about trauma, recovery, resilience, and the importance of asking for help before the weight becomes too heavy.
Mike did not just talk about wellness. He demonstrated it.
At Overwatch Peer Support, we believe leaders go first. They speak up. They show vulnerability. They share the hard lessons. They remind the next generation that strength is not pretending the job does not affect you. Strength is recognizing when it does and choosing to take care of yourself and your people.
OPS leads from the front.
Thank you, Mike, for sharing your story and continuing to make a difference in the lives of first responders.

Every day, first responders answer someone else’s call for help.
You show up for complete strangers on some of the hardest days of their lives. You listen. You solve problems. You carry burdens that most people will never see.
But here’s a question we want you to ask yourself:
What are you doing for you?
Not for your shift.
Not for your family.
Not for everyone else.
For you.
Maybe it’s a walk after work.
Maybe it’s hitting the gym.
Maybe it’s grabbing coffee with a friend.
Maybe it’s finally having the conversation you’ve been putting off.
Maybe it’s simply taking a deep breath and admitting you’re not okay.
Your mental health isn’t built only when life falls apart.
It’s built in the small decisions you make every single day to take care of yourself.
You spend your career protecting others. Don’t forget that you deserve the same care and compassion you give so freely to everyone else.
Overwatch Peer Support is here to remind you that taking care of yourself isn’t selfish. It’s part of staying strong for the long haul.
