Paulding County Commissioners Adopts Ordinance Restricting Roadside Pet Sales
Paulding County has adopted a local ordinance aligning with Georgia state law that restricts the sale of dogs, cats, and rabbits on public rights of way.
The ordinance mirrors legislation passed at the state level and sponsored by State Representative Joseph Gullett. The law is focused on regulating how and where pets may be sold, with the goal of discouraging impulsive purchases, preventing the sale of sick or misrepresented animals, and protecting consumers by ensuring greater transparency about the animals being offered for sale.
Following the passage of the state law, Aileen Culberson, Facility Manager at Paulding County Animal Control, led the effort to adopt the ordinance locally. Working in partnership with Representative Gullett, Culberson helped ensure that Paulding County’s ordinance reflects state law and can be applied consistently at the local level.
The coordinated state and local approach reflects a shared emphasis on responsible pet sales and clear standards for buyers and sellers. Residents are encouraged to work with licensed breeders, shelters, and rescue organizations when looking to add a pet to their family.
