A father s:lapp:ed his 7-year-old son for asking for a cheap birthday cake, but the very next day he gave his nephew a tablet instead. When the grandfather saw the bruise on the boy's face, he warned, “By tomorrow, you'll lose everything.”

PART 1

“Stop begging like a little beggar!” Alistair shouted before s:lappi:ng his 7-year-old son across the face just for asking if he could have a birthday cake that day.

The blow knocked Nolan to the floor beside the dining table. He stared at the ground, one hand pressed against his burning cheek, the other still clutching a small spoon. I rushed over to help him up while Alistair remained standing, acting as though he were the one who had been offended.

My name is Nicole, and for a long time I believed that would be the worst memory of my marriage.

I was wrong.

What happened the next day completely destroyed the life Alistair loved to boast that he had built all by himself.

For weeks, Nolan had been talking excitedly about his birthday. He wasn't asking for expensive toys or a party with entertainers. All he wanted was a small chocolate cake with seven candles, just like the ones he saw at his classmates' birthday celebrations.

Alistair controlled every penny in the house. Even though we lived in Phoenix and he owned a successful construction company, he gave me only enough money for groceries and checked every receipt I brought home. According to him, a responsible wife didn't need money of her own.

For three weeks, I spent my evenings mending clothes for neighbors and sewing late into the night. Eventually, I saved enough to buy a simple birthday cake.

But that morning, Alistair found the cash hidden inside my sewing basket.

“What is this for?”

“For Nolan's birthday cake.”

He snatched the money out of my hands and slipped it into his wallet.

“I'm not raising a spoiled child. Just because it's his birthday doesn't make him someone special.”

That afternoon, my mother-in-law Sharon, my sister-in-law Piper, and her 11-year-old son Mason came over for a barbecue. While I served the food, Alistair completely ignored Nolan and spent the meal praising his nephew's excellent grades.

My son waited patiently until everyone had finished eating. Then he walked over to his father with his shoulders hunched.

“Dad... could I please have a little birthday cake? It doesn't even need a picture on it.”

Alistair sl:appe:d him across the face in front of everyone.

“Maybe now you'll learn that life doesn't owe you anything.”

Sharon nodded approvingly.

“You did the right thing. Children need to be disciplined before they grow up useless.”

No one defended Nolan.

No one even asked if he was hurt.

That night, as he lay in bed hugging his teddy bear, my little boy whispered something that shattered my heart.

“Mom... next year I won't ask for anything.”

The following morning, Alistair came home carrying a white shopping bag.

For one hopeful moment, I thought he'd changed his mind.

Nicole thought so too when his father pulled out a brand-new box.

But Alistair handed it to Mason instead.

“A tablet for your grades. You earned it, champ.”

Everyone applauded.

Nolan lowered his head and quietly walked out into the backyard.

I found him sitting alone on the back steps, absentmindedly turning a birthday candle between his fingers. It was one I had bought weeks earlier.

Just then, my father, Thomas, arrived from Denver.

Nolan ran to greet his grandfather, but the moment my father saw the dark b:ruis:e on his grandson's cheek, he froze.

He looked at the boy.

Then at Alistair, laughing with Mason.

Then at the brand-new tablet.

Without saying hello, he walked straight inside and asked who had h:it his grandson.

Alistair admitted it without a trace of shame.

“He's my son. I decide how to raise him.”

My father stared at him for several long seconds.

“Then listen carefully,” he said quietly. “Starting tomorrow, I'm taking back everything that was never truly yours.”

Alistair burst into laughter.

“And what exactly are you going to take? This house, my cars, and my company are all in my name.”

Thomas picked up the gift box he had brought for Nolan and headed toward the front door.

“Enjoy tonight, Alistair,” he said without turning around. “It's the last night you'll ever feel like you own anything.”

None of us could have imagined what would happen when the sun came up...
