Never allow a contractor to lay new shingles over old shingles! Always make sure the roof is stripped down before installing new material.

Here are the top 3 reasons why this is NEVER a good idea:

1️⃣ Roofs cannot handle the extra weight. Shingles are heavy! One bundle of shingles weighs between 60-80 lbs. A small 2,500 sf roof uses around 75 bundles. Do the math, and this means there is an extra 6,000 lbs of unnecessary weight on your roof! This strains the roof structure and will compromise the integrity of your home.

2️⃣ You cannot inspect the decking if you don’t tear off the shingles. Old shingles prevent the roofer from making sure your decking is in good shape. The decking is an extremely important component of your roofing structure. Without inspecting this, the roofer will not be able to judge the health of the base decking, before starting the project.

3️⃣ The new shingles will not be laid flat. In order for shingles to work the way they are designed to work, they need to be installed following manufacturer guidelines. An additional layer of shingles completely voids any warranty the shingle manufacturer may provide.

It may save you a couple hundred bucks now to skip tearing off the old shingles, but proper installation will ensure your roof and home last for many years to come!
