July is Sarcoma & Bone Cancer Awareness Month. Sarcomas are cancers that begin in the body's connective tissues, such as muscle, fat, nerves, blood vessels, or cartilage. Bone cancers are a type of sarcoma that start in the bone itself. While these cancers are uncommon, early diagnosis can make a significant difference in treatment outcomes. Because there is no routine screening test for most sarcomas or bone cancers, knowing the warning signs is especially important.
Signs:
• Pay attention to pain that doesn't go away, especially if it worsens over time or occurs at night.
• Don't ignore a lump or swelling that continues to grow or feels firm, even if it isn't painful.
• Seek medical evaluation for unexplained bone pain, particularly if it persists for several weeks.
• Take note of unexplained fractures that occur after a minor injury or no obvious injury.
• Watch for persistent swelling, reduced range of motion, or ongoing pain near a joint.
• Talk with your TNH healthcare provider about any unusual symptoms that last longer than two to four weeks.
• Keep up with routine wellness visits so changes in your health can be evaluated promptly.
Most lumps, aches, and pains are not cancer. However, if something doesn't seem right or isn't improving, don't wait. Early evaluation can help identify the cause and, if necessary, lead to earlier treatment.
