Dick Proenneke experienced snow levels so high that they blocked his cabin door, a fairly common occurrence during his 30 winters in the Alaskan wilderness.

The massive accumulation of snow, combined with wind-driven drifting, often covered his entrance, forcing him to deal with the snowpack to get out.

Proenneke built a unique Dutch-style door for his cabin, which was partially designed to allow him to open the top half for light or ventilation, or to clear top-level snow without having the entire doorframe’s depth of snow immediately fall into the cabin.
