The flaws in the justice systems in the US cannot be made more clear. Kenosha, WI is the latest example of law enforcement targeting Black people while openly supporting white nationalist terrorism. Fox News and Tucker Carlson (as figureheads of what has somehow become the accepted platform of the political right in the US) have called the white supremacist terrorist's actions “maintaining order.” Their viewpoint is clear and villainous. The Democratic party, on the other hand, has done nothing. Their displays of “solidarity” mean nothing. Awareness doesn’t stop the next police murder. If action and change were enacted following the murder of Brianna Taylor, following the murder of George Floyd, things might be different. The platitudes cannot be enough anymore. The systems and mindsets that control The US hold as a foundation that being Black means being poor and being poor means being a criminal.
It is unjust that Black people in America have to watch as their representatives appropriate their culture in an act of “Awareness” and then fail to pass support bills for the lower class (which is disproportionately Black because of a system that has benefited those representatives). Awareness is not action. Staring a problem in the face is only the first step in solving it. The political power in this country, especially those politicians who pretend to care, have the tools necessary to put in place an action plan for the resolution. If they want continued support there needs to be a plan for action for change.
It’s sickening to watch people die in the street as “politically-minded” people throw internet one-liners back and forth at one another. Chaos and disjointment are the tools of external powers to weaken a movement. The only way forward is through solidarity and action.
