Stop answering your own prompt. One of the easiest ways to get better results from AI is surprisingly simple: don’t tell it what you think the answer is: tell it what you’re trying to accomplish.

Instead of saying: “Write an email explaining to our supplier that their poor communication is delaying our projects.”

Try this: “We’re experiencing repeated project delays involving one of our suppliers. Help me identify the possible cause, the questions I should ask, and any assumptions I might be making before we draft an email.”

The difference between these two prompts is that the first one assumes you already know what is wrong. The second gives AI room to help you think and develop your thoughts before you send the email.

Maybe the supplier is the problem, or maybe the issue is unclear expectations, a bottleneck on their end with a third-party vendor, or a process on your end you haven’t thought about. Either way, AI is often MOST valuable BEFORE the email is written, when it’s helping you organize your thinking rather than simply putting your conclusions into words.

With AI, better questions will lead to better thinking, and better thinking leads to better outputs.
