Eating fermented foods was for many years common, nearly daily practice as it allowed foods to be stored for longer. This process also creates a habitats for beneficial bacteria to grow.
The modern diet unfortunately is quite devoid of fermented foods (unless it is coming from highly processed, sugar laden Yogurts).
Our gut bacteria are an essential part of life so we need to make sure we keep our gut happy with foods that help our Bactria flourish.
Some great fermented foods include sauerkraut, miso, kimchi, tempeh and even pickled vegetables (these can be found in the refrigerated section and will say “live cultures”).
Fermented foods have also been shown to be more beneficial in increasing the bacterial diversity in the gut over eating more fiber rich foods.
Happy gut, happy you!
