If not, it may be one of the best additions you can make to your skincare routine.
Retinoids are among the most researched topical skincare ingredient available, with benefits that include:
✨ Softening fine lines and wrinkles
✨ Increasing skin cell turnover
✨ Improving skin texture
✨ Helping minimize the appearance of pores
✨ Promoting healthier, more radiant skin
Because retinoids can be drying or irritating at first, start with an over-the-counter retinol 2–3 nights per week. As your skin builds tolerance, you can gradually increase frequency or consider a prescription strength retinoid if appropriate. (Ask next time you are in the office, I am happy to get you a prescription)
A few important tips:
☀️ Retinoids can make your skin more sun sensitive, so wear sunscreen daily and stop using them for several days before laser treatments or microneedling (follow your provider’s instructions).
🤰 Avoid retinoids during pregnancy.
🤱 Topical retinoids are generally considered compatible with breastfeeding, but it’s still best to discuss them with your healthcare provider.
🥪 If you’re experiencing dryness, try the “sandwich method”:apply moisturizer, then retinol, then another layer of moisturizer.
🤎 If you have a deeper skin tone or are prone to hyperpigmentation, introduce retinoids slowly to minimize irritation, which can increase the risk of post-inflammatory pigmentation.
Retinoids are a marathon, not a sprint. With consistency, they can make a noticeable difference in your skin over time.
