This one goes out to my grandmother. When I was a kiddo, my parents would put me on a Southwest flight as an unaccompanied minor, and I’d spend two weeks in Austin—one week at my maternal grandparents and another at my paternal grandparents. At one point in my life, Austin was so singularly associated with my grandparents that I thought everyone’s grandparents lived in Austin. Austin — the city where all grandparents reside.

One summer, my paternal grandmother introduced me to Magic Shell — a chocolate sauce that hardens and becomes a crunchy, if not waxy, ice cream topping. In my opinion, Magic Shell is not good, but my memories of long summer weeks spent with my grandparents are priceless [insert Mastercard joke here].

I bought this not too long ago to walk down memory lane. The packaging and label design are not particularly compelling. Still, I selected this item as an opportunity to sit with my memories and challenge myself to draw a subject I was not drawn to visually. Could I make it interesting?
