Yesterday, we lost another child to wandering right here in North Texas. Eight-year-old MJ Ashmead.

My heart aches every single time this happens.

As Autism parents, caregivers, we know that wandering and elopement are not just statistics. These are children. These are families whose lives are forever changed.

That’s why I created my Autism Safety Kit not knowing that it would happened to my own son, Roman.

When Roman was in middle school, I received the call every Autism parent fears. He had wandered away from P.E class. Thankfully, staff found him quickly and brought him back safely. But I will never forget that feeling. My mind immediately went to the families who had received similar calls and did not have the same outcome.

I continued researching wandering and elopement, talking with families, and creating practical tools to help parents prepare. What started as a simple safety box has grown into a customized safety resource that includes tools, planning materials, and an IEP safety plan for families.

The need is too great to ignore.
