USCIS has announced a major policy shift that could significantly impact green card processing inside the United States. 🇺🇸

Traditionally, many eligible applicants already inside the U.S. could apply for permanent residence through Adjustment of Status by filing Form I-485.

However, USCIS is now signaling that green card applicants should generally use Consular Processing through a U.S. embassy or consulate abroad instead of applying inside the United States.

According to the announcement, Adjustment of Status inside the U.S. may only be granted in “extraordinary circumstances.”

In practical terms, this could mean USCIS may begin treating Adjustment of Status as an exception rather than the standard process.

This potential policy change could affect many immigration cases, including:

👉 and many immigrants currently living in the United States

At this point, this appears to be a policy guidance change regarding USCIS officer discretion—not a new law passed by Congress.

Because Adjustment of Status is specifically allowed under immigration law, many legal experts expect lawsuits and legal challenges in response.
