Part 2

Waking up to the aroma of breakfast. We tiptoe downstairs in our pajamas. “Good morning” says Aunt Kate. Betty makes plates of scrambled eggs and bacon. Uncle Money greets us. He is a tall, slender man, tanned by years of farming. He sits in the breakfast room’s corner, making toast for us.

We spend the morning visiting cousins. They live up and down the Hornsby Bend dirt road lined by fields of corn and wheat.

We can hardly wait. Tonight is the family’s big fish fry on the Colorado River. It’s a potluck dinner too. Everyone is bringing deviled eggs, dishes, cobblers and pies that they are best known for.

We take turns riding Tony Pony, our cousins Shetland pony to the big live oak tree and back.

The following day, we pile into the back of Uncle John’s pickup truck with our cousins. We are riding into town for a treat – ice cream cones.

I am in heaven. Our cousins’ hospitality made us feel welcome. I have fallen in love with Texas and my Texas cousins.

The week flew by. We load our station wagon. Our cousins wave goodbye as we pull out of the driveway. We watch as their silhouettes became smaller until we can’t see them. We visit about our cousins all the way home.

We cannot wait to see them next summer – down on Hornsby Bend!





*Just in case you are wondering what the Hornsby Tapestry has to do with our road trip to visit our Texas cousins. Aunt Kate and our cousins’ family land was Hornsby Bend. It was settled in 1832 by Sarah and Reuben Hornsby. This community has been called the oldest settlement in Travis County. Hornsby Tapestry is the Hornsby’s history book.
