How to Fix a Burst PVC Pipe (Outdoor Repair)

Supplies:
PVC pipe cutter or saw • PVC slip coupling or two couplings + pipe • PVC primer • PVC cement • rag • a manual siphon pump

Step-by-Step

1️⃣ Shut off the water
Turn off the main supply or irrigation valve.
Open a nearby faucet to release pressure.

2️⃣ Expose the damaged pipe
Dig carefully if buried. Clear enough pipe on both sides to work comfortably.

3️⃣ Cut out the burst section
Make clean, straight cuts on both sides of the crack.
Remove the damaged piece and wipe the pipe dry.

4️⃣ Dry-fit everything first
Measure the gap and cut your replacement piece.
Test-fit the couplings before glue to make sure it lines up.

5️⃣ Prime the pipe & fittings
Apply PVC primer to the outside of the pipe ends and inside the couplings.

6️⃣ Glue and assemble
Apply PVC cement to both surfaces.
Push fittings on fully with a slight twist.
Hold for 20–30 seconds so they don’t slide back.

7️⃣ Let it cure
Wait the time listed on the cement label (longer if it’s cold).

8️⃣ Turn water back on slowly
Pressurize gradually and watch the repair.

9️⃣ Check for leaks
Let water run for a few minutes.
If it stays dry — you’re good.

🔟 Backfill & protect
Cover with soft soil first.
Add insulation or bury deeper if freezing caused the burst.
