To get his bottle garden started he added some compost into the glass bottle, used a piece of wire to lower down spiderwort seedlings, and then added a pint of water. Next step was to place the sealed bottle in a sunny corner and let science do its thing. The bottle garden has been restricted from freshwater and carbon dioxide since David last opened it in 1972. Through the process of photosynthesis, this self contained ecosystem has been flexing for nearly 60 years!
