“This book is published on the occasion of the first major museum exhibition devoted to the Rocky statue. Rising Up: Rocky and the Making of Monuments is organized around a central question:
Why do millions of people visit the statue at the Philadelphia Museum of Art steps each year? To explore this prompt, at a time of continued reckoning and reimagining for monuments, the project looks at the human tendency to root for "underdogs" —athletes or everyday people who persist against all odds. Rising Up also considers the elevation of boxers as monumental figures in works of art from antiquity to the present. Finally, the art museum's steps, which have become a pilgrimage site for people from across the globe, also form part of this conversation as an inviting civic space, another type of monument. At its core, Rising Up is about how monuments are made — in artists' studios, public spaces, and mindsets alike —explored through the lens of the Rocky statue and the myriad ways people engage, debate, and gather around this site of emergent memory.”

Opening Reception: Saturday, June 13, 2026

Photography is the best medium for such an exhibition that illustrates our country’s culture and landscape in this 250th year of our country’s Declaration of Independence. PDNB Gallery is excited to explore this visual expression of America selecting special works by artists in their stable and its archives. Each work of art captures America in a visceral way made possible with the magic of photography, invented in 1826.

Stuart Allen’s latest series, Every Unique Pixel Color, expands on his earlier work, Pixels. Instead of his minimalist approach of mining pixels, this new series uses an algorithm to map every unique pixel color on an XY graph. The pixels are arranged vertically by light and horizontally by hue, originating from snapshots of food. The series is done in collaboration with his wife, Jennifer Rudgers.
View Every Unique Pixel Color and other series by Stuart Allen in our current exhibition! There are less than 2 weeks left to view Stuart Allen: Seeing Color, plan your visit to PDNB Gallery today. The exhibition closes on May 30th.
