Independence!
Until you have lost freedom, or fought to preserve it, you will not understand how precious this gift.
Freedom is only possible because of the sacrifice of countless people, both ancestors and strangers, that you will never know.
And freedom is the most fragile of gifts.
If you were born in America, you may think that freedom is a certainty, a birthright.
It is not.
You are no more guaranteed freedom than you are guaranteed good health.
You are given a chance. That is all.
A better chance than the ones who died to give you this opportunity.
Preserving freedom is like preserving your health. It requires vigilance and commitment.
If you do not cherish and protect your health, it will quickly slip away.
So too, will freedom.
The founders of America declared that we have the right to independence from an oppressive government, and included a brilliant structure to change our own if it becomes oppressive.
The process of protecting freedom, and our pursuit of happiness, never ends, and neither does our responsibility.
Today, let us celebrate Independence!
And every day, for generations to come, let us remain vigilant to protect this freedom.

“When will life go back to normal?”
I’m asked this almost everyday, as if my diagnostic skill grants me mystical prognostic abilities.
“No one knows,” I reply.
“Least of all,” I’m tempted to add, “researchers, statisticians, or government employees.”
When was life ever normal?
I’ll give you a hint. Never.
Nothing goes back.
Our world moves only forward.
All of us, in aging, know that simple truth.
Sure. Good diet and exercise can slow a few things.
Genetics, trust funds, and Botox can slow even more.
But we don’t go back.
Bodies, countries, and cultures are constantly changing.
Some for better, some for worse.
Along the way, many things can reappear, like soap, toilet paper, and bad habits.
But none “go back to normal.”
Sometimes, when we’re lucky, we get to steer the future a little. That’s one of the joys of being a physician.
With the right effort, any one of us can make a positive change on the future.
Our most powerful tool for change has always been kindness.
“But when, Doctor?”
The question pulls me back from my contemplation.
“When will life go back to normal?”
“Now,” I whisper.
“It’s back to normal now.”

America, if you’re well, then wash your hands, wear a mask and get outside! Your country needs you.
If you’re sick, stay home.
If you think you’re sick, stay home.
If you’re high risk for problems, stay home.
If you’re too damn lazy to wash your hands, stay home.
If you think that not wearing a mask is some kind of political statement, stay home.
If you want to get up in people’s faces, stay home.
If you gotta get too close to people, stay home.
If you want to be part of a crowd, stay home.
If you’re a damn racist, stay home.
If you’re a damn hater of any kind, stay home.
If you want to know why there’s an increase in positive tests, look above.
If you want to know why there’s an increase in hospitalizations, look above.
America’s got work to do.
Wash your hands, roll up your sleeves, and give America all the love and energy you’ve got. Go buy something. Go give someone something.
America wants to change for the better.
If you’re not full of love, full of peace, full of forgiveness, and full of work ethic, then get the hell outa the way.
