Grief is NOT linear. It's a crash course! It ebbs & flows in all directions & heights & depths.

Grief is VERY slow to understanding, of all kinds.

We need to honor our feelings. We can't rush this journey. It's a lifelong marathon, not a yearly sprint.

The only rulebook is your OWN heart! You must take your heart seriously. Truthfully, at the end of the day, only you can do that well. Not others. They tend to stomp over the seeds, flowers, & weeds in our garden hearts.

The first Mother's Day after I lost Lydia, someone cheerfully wished me "Happy Mother's Day!"

I forced a smile. Said thank you.

But inside I was screaming.

Happy? How can any of this be happy when my child is dead?

I spent years wishing someone had given me permission to feel exactly what I was feeling on that day. Not to perform okay. Not to paste on a smile for everyone else's comfort.

Just permission to fall apart. Permission to grieve. Permission to still call myself a mother even when the world's celebration felt like it was happening in a language I no longer spoke.
