All I can say is "WHY?" The seemingly senseless demolition of the beautiful Beaux Arts mansion that has stood on the corner of Beverly and Preston for over a hundred years is gone in one afternoon.
The home built in 1916 and once owned by oilman Ed Cox was an iconic part of Dallas and Highland Park's history. Over the course of my career I had been in this house many times and always found the place to be stately, elegant and inviting. Even after Mr Cox died and the current owner took over, I had made numerous visits to the jobsite over the past two years to see the progress of the extensive remodeling and additions. Millions had been spent on this project. Although the current owner doesn't have the best reputation for conserving historic properties, I cannot understand what could have transpired to cause this disturbing result.
The transformation happening in Highland Park and Old Dallas is saddening. Lakeside Drive barely resembles the Highland Park that wa all grew up with. One by one, I've watched the stately mansions disappear and be replaced with contemporary architectural vomit. I understand that progress isn't always pretty and I appreciate a fine contemporary structure, but the caliber and quality of many new homes in Dallas and HP will not stand the test of time. Appreciate and preserve our history, PLEASE!
