The Hippopotamus is one of the largest land animals in the world and is often mistaken for being extremely fat because of its round, bulky body. However, scientists explain that hippos actually have surprisingly low body fat compared with many other large mammals. Despite their heavy appearance, most of their body mass is made up of dense muscles, thick skin, and strong bones rather than layers of fat.

Adult hippos can weigh between 1,500 and more than 3,000 kilograms, which makes them appear massive and slow. Their large, barrel-shaped bodies give the impression that they store a lot of fat. In reality, studies and wildlife observations suggest that hippos generally have only about 2–5 percent body fat. This is quite low when compared with many other animals of similar size. The majority of their weight comes from powerful muscles that help them move effectively in both water and on land.

Muscle strength is especially important for hippos because of their unique lifestyle. Hippos spend much of their time in rivers, lakes, and wetlands during the day. Instead of swimming like many aquatic animals, they usually move by pushing themselves along the bottom with their legs. This requires strong muscles in their legs and body. Their muscular structure helps them walk underwater, move through currents, and quickly reach the shore when necessary.

Another reason hippos look so heavy is their incredibly thick skin. A hippo’s skin can be several centimeters thick and acts almost like natural armor. This thick layer protects them from injuries during fights with other hippos and from harsh environmental conditions. However, thick skin does not mean fat it simply adds to their overall weight and bulky appearance.

Their large bones also contribute significantly to their body mass. Hippos have dense skeletal structures that support their enormous size. These strong bones allow them to carry their heavy bodies and move with surprising speed when needed. In fact, hippos can run faster than many people expect, reaching speeds of around 30 kilometers per hour over short distances.

Because hippos combine dense muscles, thick skin, and strong bones, they appear much fatter than they actually are. Their body shape is also an evolutionary adaptation that helps them survive in a semi-aquatic environment. The heavy, muscular body allows them to remain stable in water and conserve energy while resting in rivers during hot days.

Overall, although hippos may look extremely fat at first glance, their bodies are mostly composed of muscle, skin, and bone rather than fat. This powerful physical structure helps them thrive in their natural habitat and makes them one of the strongest animals in the wild.

At first glance, the puzzle looks very simple. Inside a rectangular box there are three triangles of different sizes and colors. One triangle is large and blue, another triangle is medium-sized and black, and a smaller triangle is red and placed between the other two. The question asks the viewer to identify the color of the smallest triangle in the box. Because the shapes are clearly visible and easy to compare, many people quickly assume the task is only about comparing the three triangles.

The large blue triangle immediately stands out because of its size. It occupies the most space in the box and visually dominates the image. On the other side, the black triangle is smaller than the blue one but still noticeably larger than the red triangle. The red triangle is placed in the center and appears much smaller than the other two shapes, which naturally attracts attention when someone is searching for the smallest triangle.

Another element that guides the viewer’s thinking is the labeling beneath each triangle. The words “BLUE,” “RED,” and “BLACK” are written under the shapes in their respective colors. These labels reinforce the idea that the puzzle is about matching colors with the triangles and comparing their sizes. Because of this visual guidance, the viewer’s mind automatically begins comparing the three colored shapes.

However, puzzles like this are often designed to test observation and reading comprehension rather than just visual comparison. The wording of the question becomes very important. Instead of saying “the smallest triangle among the three triangles,” the question says “the smallest triangle in this box.” That small difference in wording can encourage a more careful look at the entire image.

When people rush through puzzles, they tend to focus only on the most obvious shapes. Human perception naturally prioritizes larger and clearer objects. This means smaller details in the image can easily be ignored at first. The puzzle relies on this natural tendency. It encourages the viewer to slow down and examine every part of the picture carefully rather than making a quick assumption.

The rectangular frame also plays an important role. The question specifically refers to triangles “in this box,” which suggests that everything inside the border could potentially be relevant. This invites the viewer to observe not only the large shapes but also other visual elements that might form triangular patterns or structures.

Another interesting feature is how the colors and layout influence the viewer’s attention. Bright colors like blue and red naturally draw the eye first, while darker colors like black may appear less prominent. The arrangement of the shapes also creates a visual balance that encourages the viewer to scan from left to right and focus mainly on the three obvious triangles.

Because of these visual cues, many people reach a quick conclusion without fully analyzing the wording or carefully examining the entire image. The puzzle demonstrates how easily the human brain can rely on assumptions when interpreting visual information. Its purpose is to challenge the viewer to read carefully, observe closely, and think beyond the most obvious interpretation before deciding on an answer.

Iceland has switched on the world’s largest direct air capture (DAC) carbon removal plant, called Mammoth, to help fight climate change. The facility was developed by the Swiss company Climeworks and is located near the Hellisheiði geothermal power station in Iceland. The plant uses large industrial fans and advanced chemical filters to capture carbon dioxide (CO₂) directly from the air.

Once captured, the COâ‚‚ is mixed with water and pumped deep underground, where it reacts with volcanic basalt rock and turns into solid stone. This process permanently stores the carbon and prevents it from returning to the atmosphere. The Mammoth plant is designed to capture up to 36,000 tons of COâ‚‚ per year when fully operational, making it the largest direct air capture facility in the world.

While the amount of carbon removed is still small compared to global emissions, the project represents an important step toward carbon removal technology, climate innovation, and sustainable solutions. Scientists and environmental experts believe technologies like this could play a key role in the global clean energy transition and climate action efforts.

Iceland’s renewable geothermal energy makes it an ideal location for such projects because the facility can run on clean, sustainable power. This initiative highlights how green technology, climate tech innovation, and carbon capture solutions can help reduce greenhouse gases and support a more sustainable future.

Ever wondered if you could charge your EV while driving? One Chevrolet Bolt driver tried an ingenious DIY solution!
With electric vehicles (EVs) becoming more popular, drivers are enjoying cleaner rides but also facing a common problem: finding charging stations. On long trips, running low on battery can be stressful, so some inventive EV owners are thinking outside the box.
A recent example comes from a creative Chevrolet Bolt driver, who attached a belt to the rear wheel and connected it to a generator, aiming to charge the car’s battery while driving. The contraption is simple yet eye-catching, sparking curiosity among car enthusiasts online. Many were surprised and puzzled, while others praised the cleverness behind trying to overcome a common EV challenge.
EV technology already includes energy-saving features like regenerative braking, which converts otherwise wasted kinetic energy into electricity for the battery. However, the driver’s DIY approach seemed to push the boundaries further, even though some experts questioned whether it could truly create extra energy, pointing out the laws of thermodynamics. Still, the effort demonstrates how far EV owners are willing to go to extend driving range without waiting at a charging station.
Online reactions were a mix of humor and admiration. Some joked it looked like a homegrown charging system, while others speculated the setup could work for towing behind an RV or powering high-demand devices in the car. One person even thought the device might “clean the road” while driving. Regardless of its efficiency, the contraption captured the imagination of the EV and car enthusiast community, showing creativity in action.
This isn’t the first time EV owners have experimented with DIY tricks to maximize battery life and range. Some have even set records, like a Chevy Silverado EV traveling over 1,000 miles on a single charge using clever, practical methods anyone can try. Stories like these highlight both the growing popularity of EVs and the inventive spirit of the drivers who embrace new technology while solving everyday problems.
Whether or not this particular setup becomes mainstream, it’s a reminder that innovation often comes from thinking differently and daring to test new ideas. For EV drivers, the quest for efficiency and independence from charging stations continues to inspire creativity across the globe.

What if making a bad chess move literally shocked you? One YouTuber built an electrified chessboard to test exactly that!
Chess is already a challenging game, but YouTuber Fletcher Heisler, also known as Everything Is Hacked, decided to make it even more intense. He created a custom chessboard that delivers electric shocks whenever a player makes a mistake. The device uses a TENS unit, which normally sends mild electrical currents to muscles for pain relief, but Heisler modified it to give jolts for wrong moves.
Building the electrified chessboard, nicknamed “Taser Chess”, took months of trial and error. Each square had to be wired and connected to the Raspberry Pi running the open-source Stockfish chess engine. Ensuring all 64 squares conducted electricity properly proved tricky, and countless accidental jolts made the process even more painful for Heisler himself.
The board includes four different modes to make chess even more intense. In Illegal Mode, players are shocked for moves that break chess rules. Stockfish Mode zaps players for blunders judged by the chess engine. Timed Mode punishes slow thinking, while Puzzle Mode comes with over one million preloaded problems, shocking players for mistakes. The board even displays the correct moves on the side, so you only get shocked if your moves don’t match.
Transporting the board wasn’t easy either. During its public debut at a STEM convention, Heisler’s suitcase was opened to find a shattered chessboard—not once, but twice. Despite the setbacks, he rebuilt the machine and finally showcased his electrifying invention.
Even with all the shocks, Taser Chess hasn’t made Heisler a chess master. He admits he lost every game to park hustlers and found that most of his time went into wiring and tinkering rather than improving his strategy. Still, the project highlights creativity, engineering skills, and a fearless approach to mixing technology with games.
“Taser Chess” is a fascinating combination of DIY electronics, gaming, and humor, showing how far someone will go to explore new ideas—even if it means shocking themselves repeatedly. While it may not turn anyone into the next Bobby Fischer, it’s certainly one of the most unique and entertaining chess inventions ever made.
Beyond being a fun and shocking experiment, Taser Chess also sparks conversations about learning through consequences. By linking mistakes to immediate feedback—albeit painful—Heisler’s invention encourages players to think faster, plan better, and pay closer attention to the game. While it’s not for the faint-hearted, it’s a bold example of how technology and creativity can turn even a classic game like chess into a completely new, electrifying experience.

Crude oil, also called petroleum, is a thick, dark liquid found underground and is made up of many hydrocarbons, which are molecules of hydrogen and carbon. Since different hydrocarbons have different boiling points, they can be separated using fractional distillation. In this process, crude oil is heated in a furnace until it vaporizes and then enters a tall fractionating column. The column is hottest at the bottom and coolest at the top. Hydrocarbons with high boiling points stay near the bottom, while those with lower boiling points rise to the top. This allows us to collect different products at various levels.

Gasoline, also called petrol, is one of the lightest fractions. It has a boiling range of 40–205°C and is collected near the top of the fractionating column. Gasoline is highly flammable and volatile, making it ideal as fuel for cars, motorcycles, and small engines. Its light nature allows it to vaporize easily, which is important for engine combustion.

Naphtha is slightly heavier than gasoline, with a boiling range of about 60–200°C, and is mostly used in the chemical industry. It is a light liquid that vaporizes easily and is an important raw material for making plastics, synthetic fibers, and other chemical products. Naphtha collects a little lower in the fractionating column than gasoline.

Paraffin, also called kerosene, is collected in the middle of the column. Its boiling range is 150–300°C. Paraffin is used as jet fuel, for lamps, and in heating or cooking. It is less volatile than gasoline and naphtha, burns steadily, and provides a good source of energy for various applications.

Diesel oil is heavier, with a boiling range of 250–350°C, and collects further down the column. Diesel is used as fuel for trucks, buses, trains, and some cars. It is thicker than kerosene and burns with more energy, making it suitable for engines that need high efficiency and torque.

Fuel oil or heavy oil has a boiling range of 300–400°C and is collected near the bottom of the fractionating column. It is thick, viscous, and burns slowly. Fuel oil is mainly used in large ships, power plants, and industrial boilers where high energy output is required.

Lubricating oil is even heavier and has a boiling range of 350–600°C. It is used to reduce friction in machines and engines. Its viscosity allows it to coat surfaces, making engines run smoothly and last longer.

The heaviest fraction is bitumen, which has a boiling point above 600°C. Bitumen is a very thick, sticky substance mainly used for making roads, roofing, and waterproofing. It remains at the bottom of the fractionating column because of its very high boiling point and density.

In the United States, egg prices had soared to unprecedented levels, reaching nearly $5 per dozen in January 2025, more than double the average cost three years earlier. While avian flu outbreaks had contributed to this surge, research suggested that corporate consolidation in the egg industry had also been a significant factor. A report by Food and Water Watch (FWW) revealed that a handful of large companies, including the nation’s largest producer Cal-Maine, had exerted substantial control over the entire supply chain from breeding and hatching to processing and distribution allowing them to raise prices and generate record profits, sometimes even in areas unaffected by the virus.

Despite flock losses due to avian flu, egg prices had continued climbing even in regions where bird flu was not present, such as the southeast, where production had actually increased in 2022 and 2023 compared to 2021. National inventory levels during 2023 consistently exceeded the five-year average, yet retail prices remained elevated, indicating that factors beyond supply disruptions had driven costs. Cal-Maine, which had produced nearly one in five eggs consumed in the US, had reported a sevenfold increase in gross profits in 2023 compared to 2021. The company had paid out $250 million in dividends to shareholders 40 times the previous year even while its flocks had been largely unaffected by avian flu, and sales had actually increased.

Experts noted that the industry’s concentration had allowed these corporations to influence prices using data analytics from services like the Urner Barry index, which tracked egg prices and informed retailer contracts. Critics argued this had created artificial price inflation, making eggs less affordable for consumers while boosting corporate profits. Lawmakers, including Congressman Ro Khanna and Senator Elizabeth Warren, had urged the federal government to investigate potential price gouging and antitrust violations, highlighting the strain on working-class families.

The Trump administration had announced a five-point plan to curb egg prices, including $1 billion investments in biosecurity measures, vaccines, and improved protective protocols. Proposed changes might have also temporarily eased regulations on egg exports and reassessed California’s space mandates for hens, which had raised production costs.

Meanwhile, the broader issue remained: highly concentrated production, factory farm practices, and corporate control of pricing mechanisms had created conditions for inflated prices and had exacerbated disease outbreaks, leaving many Americans paying far more for a staple once considered affordable.
