Synthetic peptides are having a moment in wellness spaces right now. And if you live with an autoimmune disease, you may have already seen them being promoted as a treatment or support tool.

I want to give you an honest picture of where the science actually stands.

Peptide therapy has been under investigation for the treatment of autoimmune disease for more than 20 years.

There are a small number of synthetic peptides that have received FDA approval, including for the treatment of myasthenia gravis. And colleagues of mine at UCLA have published research specifically examining the potential role of peptide therapy in lupus.

The science is real and it is developing. But developing is the operative word.

We do not yet have enough evidence to know whether peptide therapy has a meaningful role in the treatment of conditions like lupus, systemic sclerosis, or autoimmune lung disease. The studies needed to answer that question have not been completed. And what is being sold through wellness clinics and influencer promotions is not the same as what is being studied in controlled clinical research.

If you are considering purchasing a synthetic peptide that is not FDA approved, I would encourage real caution. Not because the science is without promise, but because promise is not the same as proof. And when you live with an autoimmune disease, what you put into your body matters enormously.

I will continue to follow this research closely and share what I learn as the evidence develops.
