Something Big Is Happening 02/12/2026

I held in a laugh when I recently heard a colleague say "Yeah, I know all about AI" because they had just returned from a conference and attended a session or two on it.

That's like walking past a hotel pool while on vacation, watching people jump and splash around in the water, and telling someone, "Yeah, now I know how to swim."

Don't kid yourselves. And this is not me being preachy. I've jumped into AI in an evolving way for the past several years, but I am enough of a realist to know I'm just scratching the surface. There's so much more to know, much more I need to learn. And keep learning, too. Because it doesn't stand still.

I came across a stunner of an article here on LinkedIn this evening by Matt Shumer, CEO and Co-Founder of OthersideAI, GP at Shumer Capital. His article is compelling, eye-opening, riveting, and - be forewarned - scary as all get-out. He writes that if you used AI just two years ago, "in AI time, that is ancient history."

In denial, nervous, or maybe just putting your toe in the water about AI? Here is an excerpt I'll share because Matt can put it better than I can:

"Here's a simple commitment that will put you ahead of almost everyone: spend one hour a day experimenting with AI. Not passively reading about it. Using it. Every day, try to get it to do something new... something you haven't tried before, something you're not sure it can handle. Try a new tool. Give it a harder problem. One hour a day, every day. If you do this for the next six months, you will understand what's coming better than 99% of the people around you. That's not an exaggeration. Almost nobody is doing this right now. The bar is on the floor."

I invite you to give his article a go. He gives solid, enlightening advice, information, and encouragement - but no sugar-coating.

Strip away your ego of "knowing all about AI" (if that's the issue) and come to the land of "At least I know what I don't know." That's a smart approach for a lot of things, and it works as a dandy catalyst for staying current, being effective in an evolving world, and "twisting the familiar" so you don't get lost in the sauce.
