Jim McCutcheon, M.M., teaches at the University of Dayton as a Senior Lecturer in Guitar and is an adjunct faculty member at Wright State University and Miami University. He is listed on the Ohio Arts Council Touring Roster and the OAC Teaching Artists Roster. He holds a B.S. in Physics from the University of Dayton, a B.M. in Guitar Performance and a M.M. in Music Education from Wright State University. Because of his four decades long college teaching career, his extensive work with schoolchildren K-12 and the success of his music store/teaching facility, McCutcheon Music, which features over 50 professional music teachers for hundreds of students each week, Jim was awarded the 2017 Ohio Governor's Award for the Arts in Arts Education.
He received two Montgomery County Culture Works Individual Artist Fellowships for as well as Ohio Federation of Music Clubs awards for his compositions. The Parents’ Choice Foundation presented him with a Silver Award for his children’s CD “A Day with the Guitar Man,” and a Recommended Award for “Guitar Man Goes to School." He also received the Muse Machine Prism Award for extensive work in elementary schools. Jim was inducted as a Sigma Alpha Iota Friend of the Arts and more recently as an honorary member of Phi Mu Alpha.
He has written several method books for guitar instruction, numerous compositions, and several articles for guitar journals in the USA and England. He currently reviews recordings for Soundboard, the quarterly publication of the Guitar Foundation of America, and The American Record Guide. Jim has produced a weekly classical guitar program, “The Intimate Guitar,” on DiscoverClassical (Dayton Public Radio, FM 88.1, 89.1 and 89.9) for 40 years. He is Guitar Advisor to the National Federation of Music Clubs, and president of the Dayton Guitar Society.
