Memorial Day holds a quiet weight; it’s a day to remember those who served, and those who never made it home. It’s also a day to honor the families who carry that absence, year after year.

Grief doesn’t always show as we expect. Sometimes it looks like showing up anyway. Cooking anyway. Raising kids anyway. Holding a job anyway. Building a life around a missing chair at the table anyway.

If you’re remembering someone today, I hope you give yourself room to feel whatever comes up. Pride and sadness can live in the same place. Gratitude and grief can share the same breath. And if you know a military family, this is a meaningful day to check in with tenderness.
You look for the perfect words; you just need real ones. And take a quiet moment to remember them with intention.

Here’s what I have seen too many times: a loved one passes away, and the family is already overwhelmed; then someone says, “I think the papers are somewhere…” Closets. Old drawers. A random safe. Email folders. A storage unit.

So begins the scavenger hunt. And the list can get long:
- Will or trust documents.
- Deeds and titles.
- Insurance policies.
- Account statements.
- Contact info for advisors.
- A list of bills and subscriptions.

Even if you have a great plan, it doesn’t help if nobody can find it, and the stress of searching can turn grief into conflict fast. A simple fix is to create a secure home for your documents, then tell one trusted person exactly where it is (not ten people, not the group chat, just one reliable person).

You can also write a short “if something happens” note, who to call, where the documents are, and what needs attention first. That small step can save your family weeks of confusion.

A lot of people walk into an estate planning consult expecting a lecture, legal terms, pressure, and a feeling that they should have done this years ago.

That’s definitely not how I want it to feel.

My goal is to create a space where you can ask the questions you have been carrying quietly. Where you can say, “I do not understand this,” and feel respected. Where we talk about your family reality, not just legal theory.

Planning should feel like you finally have a map, with someone walking beside you.

If you have been waiting because you are afraid of being judged, I want you to know this: most people don’t plan until they have a reason.

You aren’t late, and you’re here now. That matters. Let’s talk: https://edrislaw.com/contact-us

Here’s a modern problem nobody warned us about: your life is spread across logins, banking apps, photo storage, business tools, subscription services, social media, and even medical portals.

If something happens, your family may not be able to access what they need, even if they’re the right people. These are the digital items to think about:
✔️Phone and email access.
✔️Two-factor authentication methods.
✔️Photo and document storage.
✔️Business accounts and client systems.
✔️Automatic bills and subscriptions.

⚠️This is not about giving everyone your password list. It’s about creating a safe system and pairing it with legal authority, so your trusted person can act when necessary.

If you have ever watched someone try to cancel accounts, retrieve photos, or handle bills without access, you know how frustrating it can be. A little structure now can save your family from a digital scavenger hunt later.
