Splash Cove

The Decatur Park District is aware of a situation that occurred at Splash Cove on Thursday, July 9, involving an individual who was observed recording video within the facility.

The safety and well-being of our guests is our highest priority. While recording in a public place is generally lawful, our staff take any situation involving extensive filming seriously. As soon as Splash Cove staff were made aware of the situation, a pool manager and the facility manager immediately spoke with the individual to determine his reason for recording. A Decatur Park Police Officer also responded to assist in the investigation and ensure there was no inappropriate or unlawful activity.

During that investigation, the individual explained that he was the driver transporting a daycare group to Splash Cove from Springfield and was wearing a high-vis safety vest in accordance with his employer's policies. He stated that he was recording video because he was so impressed with Splash Cove and wanted to show his grandchildren the facility for a future visit. Our Park Police also contacted his employer, a major transportation company, who confirmed he had successfully completed all required background checks and was a trusted employee. At no time did our investigation uncover any evidence of criminal activity or inappropriate intent. The individual voluntarily left the facility after speaking with staff and waited outside until it was time to transport the group home.

We appreciate that parents, guardians, and other individuals remain vigilant when it comes to the safety of their children. If you ever observe behavior that causes concern, we encourage you to notify a Splash Cove staff member immediately. Our team is trained to respond quickly, investigate thoroughly, and involve the Decatur Park Police Department whenever appropriate.

We also encourage everyone to allow those investigations to take place before sharing photos or videos of individuals on social media. While concerns should always be reported, posting identifying images before the facts are known can unintentionally cause significant harm to someone who has done nothing wrong.

This unseasonably cold weather is really putting a damper on our swim time! We are cancelling today’s swim lessons, aqua fit, open swim and river walk. We will be extending lessons into next week so everyone can get there make up lessons in!
