On April 16, Antionette Catchings was walking her 14-year-old grandson home from Miller Grove Middle School when prosecutors say a driver fleeing police struck them near Covington Highway and Miller Road. Antionette was killed, her grandson was seriously injured, and the 18-year-old driver was recently indicted.

She was doing something parents and grandparents across DeKalb do every day. She should have made it home safely.

This tragedy also raises a larger public safety issue. A driver who chooses to flee police is responsible for that decision, but high-speed pursuits can place pedestrians, children and uninvolved motorists in extraordinary danger. Our community should be able to ask how pursuit decisions are made, how risks to the public are weighed and what safeguards apply near schools and pedestrian-heavy areas.

As a dad, I’ve walked my own children to school. I know how frightening it can feel to stand at a crossing, holding your child’s hand and wondering whether an approaching driver sees you or will slow down in time.

Police chases are unpredictable, and none of us can control when or where they happen. But we are not powerless. There are concrete steps we can take to make school crossings safer every day:

• Document the exact location, time and problem. Take photos when it’s safe.
• Report unsafe crossings through DeKalb 311 https://dekalbcountyga.gov/residents/report-311 and save the service request number and follow up.
• Request a new crosswalk, signal or traffic change from DeKalb Transportation at 770-492-5206 or [email protected]
• Report recurring dangerous driving through the DeKalb Police traffic-concern form at https://dekalbcountyga.gov/departments/public-safety/police/forms/report-traffic-concern
• Ask county and public safety leaders how police-pursuit policies protect school zones, pedestrians and bystanders.

One report or question may feel small. Several neighbors raising the same concern become much harder to ignore.
