On June 19, 1865, nearly two and half years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation, Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger with federal troops in Galveston, Texas, notified residents that President Lincoln had issued an order to free enslaved peoples. A celebration was held the next year on June 19, 1866, and became the first annual celebration of what is now known as Juneteenth.

With a rich history of Black excellence on our campus, Millikin recognizes the importance of celebrating Juneteenth and continues to work toward our commitment to Millikin’s core value of diversity and inclusion.
