As summer is coming to a close, we're thinking about the old Mueller Employee Picnics that happened during this time of year!
Hieronymus Mueller began the annual Mueller picnic in 1899 to support his Mutual Benefits Association. The MBA was essentially an early insurance program to support sick or injured employees. Later, Mr. Mueller's sons expanded the program as the Employee Aid Society. Employees often received free tickets to the picnic, and the Decatur area was allowed to buy tickets. The event was a massive crowd-pleaser! It was common for 5,000 people to attend each year, with profits from the tickets and food sales funding the MBA and Employee Aid Society.
These photos come from the 1941 Mueller Picnic!
