The word “asphalt” comes from the Greek, asphaltos, meaning to secure, to keep from falling, and the Greeks used asphalt as a mortar to secure walls. The Romans modified the word to “asphaltus,” and used the material to seal aqueducts, baths and reservoirs.

Did you know that asphalt driveways are resistant to cracking? This is because the material is more flexible (as it is in part made out of oil). However, having a stable sub grade is critical to the durability of the material.

There are different formulations of asphalt available for a variety of different paving applications. For example, a parking lot will have different requirements to a loading dock, and a paving expert will make sure the right kind is used.
