Eeek they’re here!!!! Come celebrate their arrival this weekend at our Meet the Flock event Saturday 2-4!

The Festival of the Cranes is coming up in January 9th-11th and to celebrate the arrival of the cranes in November, on Saturday November 8th from 2-4 PM at The Mallard - Coffee Company - Decatur, Alabama, all of the local bird mascots are gathering for you to Meet the Flock!

The Mallard will be open and serving their full food and drink menu. Activities at this event include:
- Meeting and greeting with your favorite local mascots. So far in attendance is River the Crane, Cal the Calhoun Warhawk, and Puddles the Blue Goose... more to come!

- Take photos with your mascots in front of The iconic mallard duck mural inside the coffee shop
- Join in on interactive displays from the International Crane Foundation (an internationally recognized organization in town for the winter to study the cranes)
- Enjoy activity sheets and coloring from our friends at the Cook Museum of Natural Science

This past Saturday, our office joined forces with Friends of Wheeler, Riverfront Wealth Management, and the Tennessee RiverLine to host the 2026 Crane Power Clean-Up for the Cranes.

Together, our volunteers collected 1,740 lbs. of trash and waste from our waters—helping protect wildlife and ensuring a cleaner home for our 4-foot friends, the sandhill and whooping cranes, as they begin migrating south for the winter.

A huge thank you to The Mallard - Coffee Company - Decatur, Alabama for keeping everyone fueled with coffee and snacks, and to the many organizations who pitched in, including Young Professionals of Decatur and the Boy Scouts of America.

Head downtown to the Carnegie Visual Arts Center, housed in a historic building with rotating free exhibits of local and regional artists. A peaceful, visually inspired stop with no charge.

Explore the surrounding historic district on one of our many self guided tours!

🐦 Afternoon – Wildlife & Birdwatching at Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge Complex
Drive to Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge for an immersive nature moment. This wildlife haven hosts thousands of sandhill cranes during winter months and is still beautiful in off season for birds, hiking, and scenery. Stop by the observation center and enjoy peaceful wildlife views. A unique, quiet experience.
