Most people think Super Mario just came out of nowhere.

The truth is much more surprising.

Back in the early days of Nintendo of America, the company was renting a warehouse from a real estate developer named Mario Segale.

Around the same time, Nintendo was localising its arcade hit Donkey Kong, where the main character was originally called “Jumpman.”

Then something small happened that stuck.

People at Nintendo started calling him “Mario” as a nickname, likely inspired by their landlord.

And it never changed.

That throwaway name ended up becoming one of the most iconic characters in video game history, powering the entire Super Mario franchise and shaping modern gaming culture for decades.

A casual warehouse nickname turned into a global symbol.

Sometimes the biggest characters in history start with the smallest, most random moments.
